How Dhoby Ghaut got its name.
During the mid-19th century, Indian washermen, or 'dhobies' (in Hindi), would wash the clothes they received using water from Sungei Bras Basah, and in routine, leave laundered clothes to dry out in the open.
This area became known as Dhoby Ghaut. In Hindi, ‘dhoby’ refers to 'laundry', while ‘ghaut’ refers to ‘place along a river’.

และด้วยเหตุนี้เองจึงทำให้พื้นที่บริเวณนี้กลายเป็นที่รู้จักในนาม Dhoby Ghaut ซึ่งในภาษาฮินดี 'Dhoby' จะหมายถึง 'ซักรีด' ขณะที่ 'Ghaut' หมายถึง 'สถานที่ที่เป็นแม่น้ำ' นั่นเอง
